The San Francisco Early Music Society was founded in 1975 as a membership organization to promote the performance of and appreciation for early music. For more than four decades, SFEMS has been at the forefront of the early music revival, and remains the Bay Area’s portal for early music, promoting engagement with historically informed performance spanning centuries and cultures, and creating a community reflective of our region’s diversity. Now celebrating its 50th year, SFEMS programs include a concert series, Workshos, a Youth Choir, Fiscal Sponsorship, and the Berkeley Festival & Exhibition.

SFEMS emphasizes three areas of activity:

⦁ Concerts and informal musical events
⦁ Education programs that encourage the development of amateurs and professionals, including 5 week-long summer workshops
⦁ Communication, outreach, collaboration, and support services for the Bay Area early music community

As host of the Berkeley Festival and Exhibition, SFEMS is pleased to present extraordinary main stage concerts and the opportunity for visitors to experience period instruments and learn about other early music organizations at the Exhibition.

Visit the SFEMS tables for information about the BFX mainstage events, Festival Readers, SFEMS membership, and what’s in store for our audiences in the 2026-2027 season of concerts.
