Francis Johnson’s New Cotillions

(in honor of our illustrious guest General Lafayette)

June 12 |Berkeley

Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in this dance program featuring the music of Francis Johnson (1792–1844), the legendary bugler of Philadelphia.

The first Black composer to publish large quantities of sheet music—over two hundred pieces were circulated during his lifetime—he was also the first American musician to tour Europe with his band. His music was intended for both grand public celebrations, such as the return of the Marquis de Lafayette in 1824–25, as well as casual social gatherings.

Created by Alan Jones and Julia Bengtsson, this program recreates popular dances from the early 19th century, featuring dancers from The New York Baroque Dance Company accompanied by musicians from the Music of the Regiment—an ensemble dedicated to the study and performance of 18th and 19th century European and American military music.
